Each spring, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts transforms a historic residence into a living exhibition of design, bringing together leading interior and landscape designers to reimagine a home from top to bottom.
This year, the 61st edition unfolds within Baldwin Oaks Estate – a storied 1907 residence originally built for Clara Baldwin Stocker, daughter of Elias "Lucky" Baldwin.
More than a celebration of design, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design also serves as a major annual fundraiser, supporting music education and arts programs across the community.
The Arcadian Sanctuary in Crafted Modernism
Designed by Ronnie Gor, Amorphous Studio
Rooted in the home’s Craftsman origins, the design draws from early 20th-century Czech and Viennese art – expressive yet restrained. The primary bedroom, bathroom, and closet are conceived as a continuous, immersive suite, where craftsmanship, art, and everyday living come together with quiet intention.
Birds appear as a recurring motif throughout the space, valued for their symbolic connection to freedom and intuition, subtly inspired by stories from the Baldwin family’s history.

Defining the Primary Bathroom Through Stone
While the broader suite embraces richer expressions of color and ornament, the bathroom is conceived as a moment of visual and sensory calm. Rather than extending the full palette of green and gold into every surface, the design distills these tones into subtle material expressions.
At the heart of the primary bathroom is a quiet yet deliberate material narrative – one that unfolds through texture, nuanced green and gold tones, and the play of light. Realized in collaboration with Mission Tile West – a California-based tile showroom known for its thoughtful selection of artisan materials – and Dulcet Tile – a design-driven marble tile manufacturer specializing in handcrafted mosaics – the bathroom reflects a shared commitment to material integrity and refined craftsmanship.

Natural stone becomes the defining language of the bathroom interior, where surfaces are not merely finishes, but architectural elements. As Ronnie explains, “I didn’t want to bring too much green and gold into the bathroom. Those tones belong more to the bedroom – in the ceiling, the wallpaper, the bed. Here, I wanted it to feel peaceful, but not flat or expected.” This intention is reflected in the bathroom floor, where Mercury tile in Calacatta Gold and White Thassos establishes a soft, luminous foundation that gently anchors the space.

Within the shower, a sculptural mosaic brings contrast and character: “I wanted the shower floor to feel different, but still part of the same family,” Ronnie says. Clover-shaped marble creates a rhythmic composition underfoot – an abstract nod to organic motifs found throughout the suite, where references to birds and nature quietly reappear.

In contrast, the primary elevation – spanning the bathtub, shower, and water closet – is treated with restraint. “I wanted the walls to feel simple,” Ronnie adds. “12” x 24” Calacatta Gold in a honed finish feels pure and luxurious in many ways.”

At the dual vanity, the material expression becomes more decorative. “Tulip Luxe just took my heart – it’s soft, but the gold accents make an impact. Everything complements each other beautifully while still respecting the era I was trying to represent, but in 2026.”

Together, these elements create a balanced dialogue of contrast and continuity, where each surface stands on its own, yet contributes to a cohesive, quietly luxurious whole, rooted in the era’s architectural character and the Baldwin family’s historic influence.
A Lasting Impression
While the Pasadena Showcase House of Design is temporary, the ideas it presents endure. Spaces like The Arcadian Sanctuary offer more than inspiration – they provide a vision for how materials, when used with intention, can shape not only interiors, but lived experience.
Set within Baldwin Oaks Estate, the project becomes part of a larger dialogue between past and present, where historic architecture is not simply preserved, but reinterpreted through contemporary craft and sensibility.
